Essential oils to help treat acne

Using oil to fight acne may seem counter-productive; after all sebum, our skin’s natural oils, is often what causes it in the first place. However, cleansing acne-ridden skin with essential oil helps to lift away dirty sebum, soothe irritated skin and reduce redness. Here are 5 essential oils that can help improve your skin!

  1. Lavendar oil: Reduces redness and inflammation.
  2. Tea tree oil: Powerful antifungal and antibacterial, just a drop massaged onto blemish prone areas is enough.
  3. Bergamot oil: Antibacterial and helps remove blackheads.
  4. Rosemary oil: Anti-inflammatory reduces swelling, redness and excess oil
  5. Lemongrass oil: contains vitamins A and E to help skin repair and replace dead skin cells, and to reduce scar tissue from acne, respectively.

Fancy ointments and prescription drugs often leave skin worse for the wear, increase sun-sensitivity and can wreak havoc on your skin if you stop using the products. Natural remedies can be just as effective and have no harsh side effects (barring potential allergies). Some oils are more astringent than others and be slightly drying, but you can always mix them with a carrier oil or moisturizer to minimize dryness while maximizing the benefits!
