A study conducted by researchers from Chengdu Medical College showed that aromatherapy massage and inhalation can be used to treat depression in elderly people. In this study, which was published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, the researchers looked at the effects of aromatherapy massage and inhalation on geriatric depression through a prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial.
Results of the study showed that participants that were given aromatherapy massage and inhalation had lower depressive symptoms and higher serotonin concentrations compared to those in the control group, proving that they are effective treatments against geriatric depression.
